A/Prof Paul McKenzie

Paul McKenzie was elected to the Presidency of the College at the November 2009 AGM. Paul has stood down from his role as Director of Anatomical Pathology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for the duration of his Presidency. He was admitted to College Fellowship in 1984 and obtained an RCPA Diploma of Cytopathology in 1997. A graduate of the University of Sydney he was an intern and resident at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney where he also underwent his training in Pathology.    Paul has previously been a specialist at Liverpool Hospital and at Colin Laverty and Associates. He has been a College Examiner in Anatomical Pathology since 2000. Paul has been a College representative on various external committees since the mid 1990’s and has also been a member of a number of College committees. He has been a NATA assessor since 1987. As Director of Anatomical Pathology, he maintains a full diagnostic reporting workload and has authored over 30 publications including 2 book chapters.

Paul has had an ongoing interest in postgraduate medical education, as a registrar supervisor, examiner and as a convenor of the principal College sponsored lecture and slide seminar series in AP in NSW since 1997. He has also been active in promoting educational activities in cytopathology in conjunction with the Australian Society of Cytology as a lecturer and also workshop and conference organiser.

Paul has also been prominent in the field of laboratory accreditation as NATA assessor, RCPA representative on NATA committees and as consultant pathologist for the Corrs Chambers Westgarth report “Evaluation of the Australian Pathology Laboratory Accreditation Arrangements” commissioned by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, July 2002.

Paul is one of the authors of the RCPA “Framework for the Development of Structured Reporting Protocols for Cancer” and as Chair of the RCPA Anatomical Pathology Advisory Committee is partly responsible for effecting the implementation of the first 5 of these protocols shortly to be released.

Debra graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor or Surgery at the University of Queensland in 1984. In 1991 she was awarded the Degree of Master in Health Administration in the University of NSW. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Associate Fellow of the Australian College of Health Service Executives.
 
From 1985 to 1992 she was on the Medical Staff of the Repatriation General Hospital (Greenslopes Hospital), Queensland where she was an intern, resident medical officer and then Director of Quality Assurance.
 
In 1992 she moved to the Western Hospital in Victoria. Until 1994 she was Deputy Medical Director when she was appointed as Medical Director. She was Chief Executive Officer in 1995 while also remaining as Medical Director following re-organisation of the Victorian Public Hospital System. She then became Clinical Services Manager of the Western Health Care Network at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She was also involved in the tendering process for the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory. 
 
In 1997 Debra was appointed Director, Medical Services, Medical Benefits Fund of Australia, Hospital Division in Sydney. 
 
Debra was appointed as the first CEO of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in February 1999.
